As a part of its 2020 sustainability commitments, Kellogg’s has pledged to responsibly source a number of its key ingredients, including corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, beet and cane sugar, cocoa, palm oil, fruits and vanilla, by 2020. This commitment expands the company’s efforts to work directly with agricultural suppliers , millers and farmers and improve the sustainability of their operations.
Kellogg’s reported on its responsible sourcing of ingredients and progress toward its sustainability goals in its seventh annual global Corporate Responsibility Report .
The company’s current goals are to reduce its facilities’ energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and water use by 15 percent to 20 percent per metric ton of food produced from 2005 to 2015 and to decrease its waste sent to landfill by 20 percent per metric ton of food produced from 2005 to 2015.
Kellogg’s has exceeded its waste to landfill goal, achieving a 25 percent reduction by the end of 2014 compared to the 2005 baseline. Worldwide, 94 percent of Kellogg’s waste is recycled or diverted from landfills, and 13 plants send zero waste to landfill.
The company still has work to do to meet its energy and GHG emissions reduction targets. Per metric ton of food produced, Kellogg’s energy use is down 2.4 percent in 2014, and 7.4 percent since 2005. The company decreased its GHG emissions 2 percent in 2014, and nearly 9 percent since 2005.
With water use down almost 12 percent since 2005, Kellogg’s is close to meeting its water reduction goal.
While the company works toward its 2015 goals, it has already announced new commitments to drive sustainability progress from 2015 to 2020. These commitments include targets for reducing water use, GHG emissions and energy use by an additional 15 percent per metric ton of food produced from its 2015 performance.
